How much design is too much? A home needs a strong architectural identity, but it also needs room for the people who live in it. Exploring the 50% principle, the importance of restraint, and the balance between permanent design decisions and personal expression.

Why do so many people want their homes to feel like hotels? D’Ora Tokai explores what exceptional hospitality actually gives us — from psychological reset and effortless service to comfort, and what a home can offer that a hotel never can: belonging.

Modern life has changed faster than our homes. This essay explores why the role of residential design extends far beyond aesthetics, and how a home can become one of the few places that restores what everyday life steadily consumes.

An editorial essay exploring restorative residential design and how homes can support modern life through clarity, hierarchy, and long-term thinking. A new standard for luxury that prioritises endurance over excess.

High-performing luxury Airbnb design goes beyond aesthetics. This article explores how spatial planning, material durability, and guest experience directly impact long-term rental performance in premium markets.

A full villa renovation in Dubai Hills focused on clarity, layout, and longevity. An editorial look at a calm, design-led approach to family living.

We moved in. The marble’s in, the lighting works, and the dogs have claimed their corners. With just a few finishing touches left—curtains, polishing, furniture deliveries—we’re living in the space and designing the rest from within. This is the phase where a house becomes a home, and every detail is tested, felt, and lived.

As construction winds down, the home begins to take shape through its most personal layer: furniture. In Week 8, we explore how sculptural forms, curated materials, and custom pieces complete the architecture, not just decorate it.

Week 7 marks the final phase before lighting installation begins. Wardrobes are fitted, marble is in place, and the atmosphere is beginning to show.

Week 6 of The Sculpted Abode. From kitchens to wardrobes, this week we explore how joinery forms the quiet architecture of our home — and why every detail, curve, and groove matters.

Week 5 of The Sculpted Abode marks a visible transformation: bathrooms tiled, ceilings closing, and a sculptural marble staircase taking shape. Carrara and Calacatta Paonazzo Verde set the rhythm across floors, while lighting and detail planning define flow. A story of craft, cohesion, and care — bringing our Dubai villa renovation closer to home.

Week 4 of The Sculpted Abode marks the shift to finishes: tiling begins, marble niches are prepared, and spa-like bathrooms take shape with timeless details.

As a final touch, the large blank wall in the kitchen will carry a gypsum relief inspired by Matisse’s The Dance — simplified to outlines only, a gesture of movement, joy, and connection. For us, it captures the atmosphere we want to feel in the space: alive, human, celebratory.

Week 2 of The Sculpted Abode marked a shift from demolition to rebuilding. Walls rose, systems were installed, and the invisible work of MEP and HVAC became the backbone of the home.

Week 1 of The Sculpted Abode was a whirlwind of emotions and decisions. As both designer and homeowner, I faced the shock of seeing our family home stripped to its bones — and the urgency of solving unexpected MEP and structural surprises. With decisive action and a trusted team, the renovation moved ahead at remarkable speed.

From hidden systems to handpicked fixtures, this chapter reveals the foundation of our Dubai home renovation — and what really makes it run on time.

Relocating during our home renovation meant packing up a decade of memories, two young children, three elderly pets, and every rhythm of daily life we had carefully built. In this chapter of The Sculpted Abode, I share how we found a temporary home that worked for everyone, how we approached the move with intention, and why letting go, both emotionally and logistically, was the first step toward something better.
